Club Officials e-newsletter – July/August 2012

Samuel Watson, Wednesday, 8 August 2012

Dear All

Thank you to everyone for their contributions toward a very successful YV Club Conference, which was held at Royal Brighton Yacht Club on Saturday 4 August. Many thanks to the club for its excellent hospitality. Thanks also to all of the presenters. Each of the presentations is available at this link on the YV website. The Club Conference further re-affirmed YV and the clubs’ focus around participation, making sailing opportunities as attractive as possible and growing memberships. We were given a very strong sense that the majority of clubs will be adopting the Discover Sailing brand in some way, shape or form, which is fantastic. It is also great to see Sail Melbourne ‘regulars’ doing so well and winning gold in London. Congratulations to Tom Slingsby and the Australian Sailing Team. We are looking forward also, to the 470, 49er and Match Racing outcomes over the next few nights with more gold either secured already or a strong possibility.

Regards

Steve Walker

CEO

YV AGM: The Yachting Victoria AGM is scheduled to take place on Monday 17 September at Port Melbourne Yacht Club at 7pm. We look forward to seeing all club delegates in attendance. As well as all annual reporting and the election of Board members, there will be one Honorary Life Membership nomination being recommended to the membership. All AGM related documents including the agenda will be circulated early next week.

Discover Sailing: The Discover Sailing initiative continues to gather momentum in Victoria. Sean Bly is busy signing up additional clubs as Discover Sailing Centres. This enables them to deliver accredited and recognised courses, as delivered by qualified and insured instructors. The Discover Sailing website continues to develop. Click Here to view the Discover Sailing website. Gavin Wall (Discover Sailing Manager) meanwhile, has this week sent out an important document in relation to Discover Sailing Days and Discover Sailing Week. We are looking forward to a great number of clubs engaging in one or two of these activities, and, all going to plan, reaping the benefits.

YV Staffing Structure: During the past two weeks YV has been delighted to add Tom Cotter and Sarah Ogilvie to the staff team. Tom has commenced as Boatshed Business Coordinator and Sarah as Sailability Coordinator. Tom learnt his craft growing up in Ireland and has extensive sailing, coaching and instructing experience in several countries. Sarah is a dual Olympian and Laser Radial champion with an array of skills and experiences. We are delighted to have them join us here at YV. Earlier today we were also pleased to announce Chelsey Taylor as the new Club Services Coordinator. Chelsey is as a Sports Management ‘near’ graduate from Deakin University where she will soon complete her commerce degree. As well as this, Chelsey has held roles with North Melbourne Football Club, Cricket Australia and Melbourne Victory, in a variety of administration, customer service and development roles/placements. Chelsea will commence on August 22.

Safety Category Stickers: Yachting Victoria currently have the new 2012-2013 Safety Category Stickers. They cost $2 each. Please send an email to sailing@yachtingvictoria.com.au with your order and Yachting Victoria will send the stickers and an invoice to your club. The current Safety Declaration Forms can be found here. Club members are to complete these forms and hand them to your club’s safety officer, who if satisfied, gives the member a safety sticker. If you have any queries please contact sailing@yachtingvictoria.com.au.

Sport and Recreation: The Victorian Government has recently agreed to continue its support of sailing in Victoria for a further three years. As well as support through Sail Melbourne and the VIS Sailing Program, the office of Sport and Recreation has renewed its arrangement with Yachting Victoria through the Victorians More Active initiative. Victorians More Active emphasizes the joint focus that YV and the Government have around Participation, Officials, Coaches and Membership.

2012 Australian Schools Team Racing Championship - Congratulations: Albert Sailing Club did a great job hosting the 2012 Australian Schools Team Sailing Championship from Thurs 12th - Sun 15th July at Albert Park Lake.
