WITH the opening of the new world-class facilities at Sandringham Yacht Club, excitement is mounting for organizers of ISAF Sailing World Cup – Sail Melbourne, which is proud to be staging its major sailing event at the club this December. The multi million dollar refurbishment has transformed the yacht club into a leading corporate hospitality and entertainment venue – the ideal setting for the Sailing World Cup- Sail Melbourne. Sandringham Yacht Club CEO Richard Hewett said the club was delighted to be hosting the world cup at its new facility. ``With great sailing waters, our floating marina, extensive hardstand and newly completed $12.75 million clubhouse, competitors and spectators alike are set to enjoy World Class facilities and services this year,'' Mr Hewett said. ``Competitors and their friends and families will enjoy honorary membership for the duration of the regatta and we look forward to delivering a great regatta. This is set to be a special year for all involved and the ISAF Sailing World Cup is incredibly exciting for the sport, for SYC and for the City of Bayside.'' Yachting Victoria CEO Ross Kilborn said the club's renovation made it the best yacht club facility in the country, helping to further cement Melbourne's reputation as a leading tourism and sporting destination. ``It is now the Rod Laver Arena of sailing,'' Mr Kilborn said. ``It is a fantastic place to host the SWC – it has great views of the sailing and is an excellent venue for corporate hospitality, the public and the media to appreciate our sport.'' The opening of the refurbished yacht club was held last weekend, just days after the club learned it had won the Environment Award at the 2009 Victorian Marine Industry Awards. The new facility was recognised by the Victorian Marine Industry for its wide range of environmental initiatives such as environmentally-friendly building materials, waste collection and recycling, rainwater collection and re-use and clean storm water using bio-retention drainage design for its new premises. The club has also installed a 60,000 litre water tank and 34 site wide water efficient shower heads. The international Grand Prix of sailing for Olympic sailors and aspirants, the ISAF Sailing World Cup – Sail Melbourne will be the only world cup event held in the Southern Hemisphere and is the first port of call for competitors before they head to Miami (USA), Palma (Spain), Hyeres (France), Medemblik (Holland), Kiel (Germany) and finishing in September at Weymouth (England), after which the ISAF SWC champions will be crowned. Online registration is required for both competitors and coaches, and will be available on the Sail Melbourne website, www.sailmelbourne.com.au soon.
