Media Release: 12th May 2009 Local Students to Complete Marine Safety Victoria's Boat Smart: Taking Young Boaters Beyond the Basics Program Students from SEDA's Aquatic Sports Development Program, will this week be participating in Marine Safety Victoria's newly developed "Boat Smart - Taking Young Boaters Beyond the Basics" program at The Boatshed on Albert Park Lake and Pier 35. Aimed at secondary school students between the ages of 13-18, this innovative three day program is designed to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge required to be safe boat operators. Instructors from Boating Victoria teach students practical boat handling skills, trip preparation, emergency procedures, buoyage systems, navigation and how to read weather. On successful completion of the course students are presented with a Marine Safety Victoria Certificate which enables them to obtain a restricted Victorian Recreational Boat Operator Licence. Marine Safety Victoria is committed to instilling a boat safety culture in young boaters and to increase the safety of those who operate boats, their passengers and other waterway users.
