SCHOOLS BACK AND SO IS SCHOOLS TEAM SAILING
Press Release – for immediate release 12/02/2009
SAILING'S premier schools event, the Victoria Harbour Schools Sailing Series will kick off at Melbourne's Docklands on February 26, 2009, again jointly sponsored by Lend Lease's Victoria Harbour and the City of Melbourne.
Twenty four schools from across the State will take part in two qualifying series and a final series – all events to take place in Docklands. The final series will be contested in May by the 12 best schools who will compete for the title of Victorian Schools Teams Champions.
The winners will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Schools Teams Championships to be held in Queensland in July.
Each school will crew three identical two-person Pacer dinghies, proudly supplied by Yachting Victoria, in the teams racing format under internationally approved modified racing rules which allow more aggressive tactics than conventional fleet racing.
So far 16 schools have signed up for the event including last year's Victorian champions St Leonard's College and runners-up the Peninsula School.
Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the City of Melbourne was excited to be a part of the series once again.
``We are delighted to be sponsoring the Victoria Harbour Schools Sailing Series again,'' he said. ``The Docklands offers the perfect environment for this very challenging and highly energised competitive event. I wish every school the best of luck''.
Ellie Schwab, Project Director for Victoria Harbour said Lend Lease was proud to sponsor the schools sailing series.
``We are excited to be hosting this terrific event again at Victoria Harbour,'' Ms Schwab said.``It is great to see people enjoying Victoria Harbour and the Schools Sailing Series provides a good opportunity for the schools teams to further develop their skills.''
