SCHOOLS BACK AND SO IS SCHOOLS TEAM SAILING Press Release – for immediate release 12/02/2009 SAILING'S premier schools event, the Victoria Harbour Schools Sailing Series will kick off at Melbourne's Docklands on February 26, 2009, again jointly sponsored by Lend Lease's Victoria Harbour and the City of Melbourne. Twenty four schools from across the State will take part in two qualifying series and a final series – all events to take place in Docklands. The final series will be contested in May by the 12 best schools who will compete for the title of Victorian Schools Teams Champions. The winners will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Schools Teams Championships to be held in Queensland in July. Each school will crew three identical two-person Pacer dinghies, proudly supplied by Yachting Victoria, in the teams racing format under internationally approved modified racing rules which allow more aggressive tactics than conventional fleet racing. So far 16 schools have signed up for the event including last year's Victorian champions St Leonard's College and runners-up the Peninsula School. Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the City of Melbourne was excited to be a part of the series once again. ``We are delighted to be sponsoring the Victoria Harbour Schools Sailing Series again,'' he said. ``The Docklands offers the perfect environment for this very challenging and highly energised competitive event. I wish every school the best of luck''. Schools taking part in the first qualifying round on February 26 and 27 include: · McKinnon Secondary College · Haileybury College · St Michael's Grammar · Christian College Geelong · Mentone Grammar · Trinity Grammar · Melbourne Grammar · Melbourne High School · Toorak College · Mentone Girls Secondary College Schools taking part in the second qualifying round on March 28 and 29 include: · Firbank Grammar · St Leonard's College · Geelong Grammar · Woodleigh School · Xavier College The first qualifying event will be held at Docklands Yacht Club on February 26 and 27. The second, also to be held in Docklands, will be on March 28 and 29. The final 12 teams sail off for the State Championships in May (date TBA) with the top two teams being given the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Championships in July.
