IAN CUNNINGHAM - Treasurer
I would like to bring the views of a smaller club, together with the skills and knowledge I have learned during the development and implementation of initiatives within my home club. My professional training has assisted in establishing strategic programs and helping to identify goals for future committees.
Having recently returned from Dubai after 2 years offshore, i am looking to become involved in YV to further enhance the quality of yachting and its administration. I have a strong background infinance, governance and operations, both domestically and internationally and feel that whilst the sport is heading in the right direction, it needs to continually evolve and adjust. My skills combined with my passion for yachting can assist YV/YA in becoming an even more effective operation.
The sport is travelling well although as society changes there is the ongoing challenge of increasing participation in sailing in the face of increasing competition from alternative leisure activities. I believe my passion for sailing, business experience in financial management / strategic planning / marketing and sailing experience in class development, coaching and OTB racing will allow me to make a positive contribution to YV.
Sailing experience includes competing in nine world championships, winning a National Title and coaching Juniors. I am a Fund Manager, previously an Executive Director of Rothschild Australia Asset Management and currently an investment manager and shareholder in an investment management boutique.
My original qualification is as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and I was a former Partner in a firm in London. I currently run my own consultancy, facilitating finance for non-financial managers training, leadership and management development as well as executive coaching. Prior to moving to Australia in 1999 I spent 4 years living and working in SE Asia after I left the UK.
I have been sailing since the age of 3; in early years this was cruising with my family around the Solent. Later I joined the Junior Offshore Group and competed in a number of cross Channel races as well as a few Cowes Weeks. I joined RMYS soon after moving to Melbourne, have enjoyed Saturday racing and last year competed in the Melbourne to Launceston race. I have served on the Finance Committee at RMYS since 2002, becoming Treasurer in 2004. I stepped down in July 2010 due to Interstate work commitments, which have now lessened.
My sailing background includes OTB classes and more recently keel boats in both small (Mornington Peninsula) and larger clubs (currently SYC and the ORCV), sailing on Port Phillip, Australia more widely, North America and Europe. Professionally, I am a technologist with considerable experience in managing large multi-national technology-based companies.
With my diverse sailing background and business experience, I look forward to helping YV manage and further develop the sport of yachting in Victoria
Having been involved in sailing since I was a child I have a great interest in sharing my love for the sport with other people. I have been involved on the committee of my local yacht club, situated on Western Port Bay, in various positions over the past 12 years.
For the past 5 years I have been the Coordinator of the Tackers program at our club. As one of the first clubs in Australia to run this program I have a good understanding of the needs of clubs and the support they require in delivering the program. I bring to the board a small yacht club perspective.
